BUILD Metro DC
BUILD Metro DC uses entrepreneurship education as a hook to encourage academic and career achievement. The organization carries youth through a four-year program, beginning in ninth grade. Throughout the year, students develop a business plan that they pitch to investors and use to apply to an afterschool incubator program. Students accepted to the incubator will operate their businesses and receive academic, college planning, and professional counseling from tutors and local business mentors.
Devita, a once-homeless scholar of the class of 2013 represents a classic success story from BUILD. She entered the program skeptical and guarded, but stepped up as the CEO of her company where she flourished to create and market her home-made dog treats business. This year, BUILD will serve over 300 students in the Metro area in collaboration with 100 mentors. As BUILD looks to expand its reach within the district, it calls for community mentors and tutors to further facilitate its great work. As the organization grows, it learns the areas in which it excels and areas for collaboration. By aligning with Raise DC and C3N’s Data Initiative, BUILD was excited to visualize their exemplary student performance, and looks forward to more robust data collection.
